Prognosis

The prognosis for patients who have fibromuscular dysplasia depends on the severity of the condition and complications that develop. Many patients can be successfully treated. In some cases, complications of fibromuscular dysplasia result in severe disability or death.

Research

Additional research is needed to determine the exact cause for fibromuscular dysplasia and develop additional treatments for the disorder. Current studies are focused on finding a genetic link between fibromuscular dysplasia and other autoimmune and connective tissue disorders (e.g., scleroderma, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Marfan syndrome).
