Prognosis

Although aortic dissection is a life-threatening condition, patients can recover if they are treated quickly enough. Approximately three-quarters of patients who receive prompt treatment live another 5 years, and 40–69% live another 10 years, whether they have been treated with surgery or medication.

To prevent complications, patients often are advised to monitor blood pressure closely and contact a physician immediately if readings are not within a recommended range. Under the care of a physician, the following measures can help lower blood pressure:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Follow a low-salt, low-cholesterol diet
  • Quit smoking
  • Take all medications as directed

Avoiding trauma to the aorta also is important and patients should always wear a seat belt when riding in or driving a car. Patients who have been treated for aortic dissection should follow the advice of a qualified health care provider regarding lifestyle and activity levels.
